Construction

The entire church has been built through the combined efforts of Episcopal mission trips and our Honduran brothers and sisters in Christ. In 2003 the second floor of the school area of the church was begun. This project is typical of the construction projects and is described below. The picture to the left shows the results of our efforts at mid-week.

Construction is typically hard work. There are no fork-lifts, concrete mixers or any other type of construction aids. River sand (with rocks and gravel in it) is hauled from the front of the church to the construction area where it is shoveled through a sieve to sift out the rocks and gravel and then hauled to the mixing area where it is manually mixed, first with cement, then with water, with shovels on the floor.

Concrete blocks are moved by hand, bucket-brigade style. The laying of the blocks into the wall is handled by our Honduran brothers the leader of which is a past Senior Warden and leader of the San Juan Chapter of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew.  However, we did learn how to cut and tie re-bar and keep a fresh supply of concrete on the scaffolds for our brothers.
