The Medical Clinic is held in the school building. Partitions are assembled to give privacy to the patient and doctor or nurse. In the morning when the team arrives there is already a line of patients waiting for medical attention. Some travel by foot from as far away as 30 miles. This line never goes away. The team (typically six to eight medical professionals) sees hundreds of patients a day. The doctors and nurses are careful to attend to the spiritual and personal needs of each patient as well as his or her medical needs.
The
Pharmacy is located in the school's store room. Three people, two Pharmacists and a helper,
can usually keep up with the prescription flow. Four to five hundred prescriptions a
day is not an unusual load for this team. Over and a ton of
medicine and medical supplies is brought along on each trip. Most of this is dispensed
through prescriptions during the week. The rest is left for dispensing by
traveling doctors who visit the area weekly – nothing is wasted.
